EMDR Therapy in Edina

A traumatic experience can be over and still affect how you feel, react, or relate to others. You may feel constantly on edge, avoid reminders of what happened, or find that certain memories still carry the same emotional intensity.

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy used to treat trauma and PTSD. I offer EMDR therapy for adults in Edina and online throughout Minnesota.

How EMDR Therapy Works

EMDR is a structured approach designed to help you process distressing memories. During EMDR, you briefly focus on aspects of a memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation, such as guided eye movements or alternating taps.

The goal is not to erase what happened. It is to reduce the distress connected to the memory so the past has less influence over how you feel and respond today.

When EMDR May Be Helpful

You do not need to be certain that your experience “counts” as trauma. If something from the past continues to affect your emotions, relationships, or sense of safety, it may be worth addressing.

EMDR may be helpful if you:

  • Experience intrusive memories or distressing dreams

  • Avoid people, places, or situations that remind you of what happened

  • Feel constantly on edge or easily startled

  • Struggle with guilt, shame, or self-blame

  • Feel numb or disconnected from yourself or others

  • Notice that past experiences continue to affect your daily life

What to Expect During EMDR Therapy

EMDR does not need to begin immediately. We will first take time to understand what brings you to therapy, discuss your goals, and make sure you have the support and coping skills needed for the work ahead.

When you feel ready, we will choose a memory to focus on and move through the process in short sets, pausing regularly to notice what is changing. You remain aware and in control throughout the session, and you can slow down or stop at any time.

Do I Have to Relive My Trauma?

EMDR does involve bringing a distressing memory to mind, so difficult thoughts, emotions, or physical sensations may come up. However, you usually do not need to describe every detail aloud or repeatedly retell the entire experience.

We will approach the memory in a structured way, with preparation and regular check-ins. The process is not about forcing you through the past. It is about helping you work through it at a pace that feels manageable.

Is EMDR Right for You?

EMDR can be effective for trauma and PTSD, but it is not automatically the best starting point for every person. Sometimes we begin by building coping skills, strengthening emotional stability, or using another therapeutic approach that better fits your current needs.

You do not need to decide whether EMDR is right for you before reaching out. During our initial sessions, we will talk about what you are experiencing, answer your questions, and determine together which approach best supports your goals.
